Kate Brown Speech, Language & Learning helps people with speech sound disorders.

A speech sound disorder may involve problems with articulation (making sounds) and phonological processes (sound patterns).

Articulation

Young children often make speech sound errors as they are learning to talk.  The child, adolescent or adult may have an articulation disorder if these errors continue past the expected age.  Examples of a speech sound disorder are a 10 year old who lisps (mispronounces "s") or a 4 year old who says "tat" for "cat".

Phonological Processes

A phonological process involves patterns of sound errors.  These processes govern the rules of speech.  A phonological disorder can affect the development of reading and spelling skills.
